Overview
Every file you upload to BeatStars Projects counts toward your storage allowance. This article answers the most common questions about how storage works, how it's attributed between collaborators, what happens when you hit your storage limit, and how changes to your subscription plan affect your stored content.
Storage is always attributed to the person who uploaded the file, not the owner of the project. This is true even in shared projects with multiple collaborators.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much storage do I get?
Storage is determined by your subscription plan:
- Free account: 2 GB
- Starter plan: 5 GB
- Growth plan: 10 GB
- Professional plan: 25 GB
- Projects Plan: Unlimited. $7.99/month or $49.99/year before tax, includes BeatStars Publishing
You can view your current usage at any time from your Projects home. A progress bar shows how much storage you've consumed (unless you have unlimited storage).
Who does storage count against when collaborating on a project?
Storage is always attributed to the person who uploaded the file. If you invite a collaborator to your project and they upload a 500MB stem, that 500MB counts against their storage, not yours. Your storage is only affected by files you personally upload.
What happens if a collaborator runs out of storage?
Collaborators must have enough storage in their own account to upload files to a project. If their storage is full, they'll see a clear message prompting them to upgrade their plan or free up space. Until they do, they won't be able to upload to any project, yours or anyone else's.
What happens to a collaborator's files if I remove the collaborator from my project?
The files remain in your project, but storage attribution of those files transfers to you, the project owner. You'll see your storage usage increase to reflect the files the collaborator previously contributed.
Before removing a collaborator who uploaded a significant number or size of files, check that you have enough storage available to take on their contributed uploads. If accepting the storage attribution would push you over your storage limit, removal of the collaborator from the project may be blocked.
What happens when I duplicate a project?
Duplicating a project creates a full copy of all files. The new copy files are attributed to you, the duplicating user, and count against your storage allowance. Before duplicating, the system checks that you have enough available storage to accommodate the copy. If you don't, duplication will be blocked, and you'll see a prompt to upgrade your plan.
What happens when I reach my storage limit?
As you approach your storage limit, you will receive warning notifications:
- At 85% storage used: A warning notification suggests that you upgrade or manage your files.
- At 95% storage used: A more urgent warning is displayed.
At 100% storage used, uploads are blocked. You will see a message that says "Storage limit reached. Upgrade your plan or delete files to continue uploading" with a View Upgrade Options button.
At 100% storage used, any action that would push you over the limit is blocked entirely; there are no grace periods for free users, and no partial uploads. You will need to either upgrade your plan or free up space to continue.
What happens if I downgrade my plan and I'm over the new limit?
When you downgrade to a plan with less storage than you currently use, you enter a 90-day grace period. During this time:
- You can still access and download all your existing files.
- You cannot upload new files until you reduce usage below the new limit.
- You will see persistent warning banners and receive reminder communications regarding your storage limit.
If you haven't reduced usage or upgraded to or reactivated a plan with a larger storage limit within 90 days, your excess files become inaccessible, starting with the oldest files first.
Can I see who uploaded each file in a shared project?
Yes. Every file displays an "Uploaded by [User Name]" indicator so you can see at a glance who uploaded which files.
