What is BeatStars Projects?
It’s a file storage, organisation, and collaboration platform built specifically for music creators. Beyond just holding your files, Projects tracks the history and rights behind them, so a project isn’t just a folder of audio; it’s a record of who contributed what, and who owns what share of it.
What’s the difference between Projects and regular cloud storage?
General cloud storage tools store files. Projects is built around music specifically: audio playback and waveforms, take recording and editing without leaving the platform, timestamped comments on a track, collaborator roles suited to a creative team, and a structured system for tracking ownership splits. None of that is bolted on; it’s the core of how Projects works.
What is The Record?
The Record is the part of Projects that tracks rights and history. Every track can have a splits sheet showing who owns what percentage, and those splits move through a proposal and acceptance process so an agreement isn’t final until everyone named on it has confirmed. The Record keeps a version history of that agreement over time.
Who are Project roles for, and what can each one do?
Every collaborator on a project has a role:
- Owner: full control over the project, including deleting it and managing splits
- Admin: can manage collaborators and most settings, but can’t delete the project
- Editor: can upload and manage their own files, but can’t manage collaborators or splits
- Viewer: can view and optionally comment, depending on what the owner allows
What can I actually do inside Projects?
A few things beyond basic file storage:
- Record audio directly in your browser, with an optional backing track
- Edit audio (trim, fades, levels) without leaving Projects
- Leave comments anchored to a specific moment in a track
- Set up and verify ownership splits through The Record
- Share a project, folder, or file with a link, with optional password protection and download controls
How does storage work?

Do I need a paid plan to use Projects?
No. Projects is available on the Free plan with 2 GB of storage. Paid plans raise your storage limit and unlock features like password-protected links, disabling downloads, and file versioning. The Projects Plan is a separate subscription plan that costs $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year before tax, giving you unlimited Projects storage and including BeatStars Publishing.
